Free radicals are a major cause of aging and diseases, including cardiovascular, neurodegeneration and inflammatory diseases and cancer. S-allylcysteine (SAC) and S-allylmercaptocysteine (SAMC), the major compounds of garlic, are well known as playing an antioxidant action by scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS), enhance activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione in the cells. These mechanisms can prevent endothelial cells from injury by oxidized molecules which lead to atherosclerosis. Nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) is transcription factor activated by free radicals, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and TNF-α. Activation of NF-κB contributes to the expression of adhesion molecules such as VCAMP-1 and ICAMP-1. These events further accelerate the formation of atherogenic lesions and cell death. SAC and SAMC suppression of H2O2 production or decreased secreted TNF-α, and inhibit AP-1 and c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNKs) that regulate protein synthesis, lead to reduce NF-κB. These data suggest that garlic and its main compounds, SAC and SAMC may be useful for the prevention of the effects of free radicals and atherosclerosis.

Cadmium sulfide (CdS) thin films, both undoped and doped with various concentrations of potassium (K) (0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5 M), were synthesized on borosilicate glass substrates using the sol-gel screen-printing technique. The results showed that K-doping at concentrations above 0.3 M promoted grain agglomeration, resulting in a compact morphology with no significant voids or porosity across all thin film conditions, indicating strong adherence and coverage between grains and nanoparticles (NPs). X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed a hexagonal structure for the undoped and 0.1 M K-doped films; however, this phase disappeared at higher K concentrations. A low-intensity cubic phase was observed across all the samples. These structural observations were further validated using Raman spectroscopy. The evolution of the photoluminescence (PL) peaks with increasing K-doping concentration indicates structural distortions, suggesting that the incorporation of K+ions may introduce new defects or degrade the crystal quality. The presence of Cd-S bonds within the films was validated by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Optical analysis showed low transmittance (0.45 – 1.75%) and reflectance (0.07 – 0.70%) values in the 550 – 1000 nm wavelength range, indicating distinct absorptive behavior. The energy band gap (Eg) decreased from 2.21 eV for the undoped film to 1.92 eV as the K concentration increased up to 0.4 M, then rose slightly to 2.18 eV at 0.5 M doping. Mott-Schottky analysis demonstrated a shift in the conduction band edge from -1.15 V (undoped) to between -0.68 and - 0.99 V (K-doped), along with an increase in donor density from 5.329 × 1020 to 27.156 × 1020 cm3 for the 0.2 M to 0.5 M K-doped films. According to the EIS results, the 0.4 – 0.5 M K-doped CdS thin films induce the generated electrons and exhibit a lower impedance with electron lifetimes due to the higher electrocatalytic activity and faster exciton recombination, causing subsequently degraded more rapidly in electrolyte region. Therefore, the optimal K-doping condition presents a highly promising active electrode material for application in electrochemical systems and other optoelectronic devices.

This study investigated the effects of applied electrodeposition potentials on the structural, optical, and electrical properties of multiphase metal telluride thin films for optoelectronic applications. The rhombohedral Sb2Te3, Bi2Te3, Al7Te10, and Bi4Te3 phases were identified and incorporated into thin films containing hexagonal Bi2Te, BiTe, and monoclinic Al2Te3. Variations in the crystallographic parameters are attributed to recrystallization and phase transformation processes driven by the energy stored in the parent Bi2Te3 phase. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed a compact inner surface covered with residuals dispersed across the film surface at the applied potentials of 4 and 6 V. At an applied potential of 8 V, crack formation accompanied by a reduction in surface residuals was observed, whereas films deposited at 10 V exhibited more pronounced cracking with no noticeable residuals. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) confirmed the presence of Al, Sb, Te, and Bi in all the deposited films, indicating the successful incorporation of binary multiphase metal chalcogenide compounds. The band gaps of the deposited films are decreased with increasing electrodeposition potential, highlighting the tunability of the electronic properties of multiphase metal telluride thin films. A significant decline in the activation energy (Eac) was observed between 6 and 8 V, suggesting that this range is the optimal applied voltage window for device applications due to enhanced thermally activated conduction. Finally, density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the photo absorption coefficient indicated that Bi2Te3 and Sb2Te3 exhibited higher absorption coefficients than Al2Te3 and Al7Te10. Among these materials, Bi2Te3 exhibited the strongest absorption coefficient at higher photon energies, whereas the other phases exhibited enhanced absorption in the red-light region.

Additional compositions with structural stabilities in a subset of the aluminum-boron hydrides (Al–B–H) under different pressures are theoretically investigated through the ab initio random structure searching method. The lattice dynamical stability of new stable compositions (Al3BH12 and Al2B2H12) is discovered and presented through the entirely positive modes of the phonon dispersion relation. We therefore observe the important parameters in the field of hydrogen storage, such as formation enthalpy, gravimetric hydrogen density, desorption temperature, band structure, and temperature dependence. We analyze the hydrogen storage mechanisms of three stable Al–B–H compounds, including Al3BH12, Al2B2H12, and AlB3H12, to compare the hydrogen release abilities and make recommendations for improving energy storage under the effect of pressure. Furthermore, the calculated activation curves from the hydrogen vacancy diffusion kinetics to the host hydrides indicate a high probability of hydrogen transport to these host hydride materials. The newly discovered compound Al2B2H12 (C2/m) has interesting potential for hydrogen storage due to its ability to both absorb and release hydrogen atoms from host materials.
