Nowadays, the aging population is dramatically increasing. One of the signs of their advancing years has been shown in the form of an accumulation of molecular and cellular decline. This accumulation leads to the deterioration of body function, which causes difficulties for the elderly in their daily activities. Particularly in the activities related to the upper extremities (UEs) to complete the tasks, both unilateral hand function activities such as brushing teeth with one hand and bilateral hand function such as driving a car by using both hands. The contemporary and well-known UE assessments are The Purdue pegboard (PPT), the nine-hole peg test (9-HPT), and the Upper extremity performance test for the elderly (TEMPA). PPT and 9-HPT are commonly used in research settings and clinics. TEMPA is the tool to assess the UE function in the elderly, consisting of daily routine-imitated tasks. Despite a wide variety of UE assessment tools, the studies that differentiate the pattern of UEs functional test and analyze the abilities of the assessment are insufficient. Therefore, this article aims to review the characteristics of the three UE assessment tools: PPT, 9-HPT, and TEMPA. According to the finding, PPT and TEMPA have more subject matters than 9-HPT. Only TEMPA concerns about the quality of movement in the elderly. However, none of the assessment tools can comprehensively assess all UEs.
