en
The purpose of this research was to study and compare the target domains of “火” in Chinese and “ไฟ” in Thai, as well as the similar and different background factors reflected through the metaphor of fire. Using the conceptual metaphor theory as a guide, the researcher has included the word and idioms from dictionaries, books, and related documents in Thailand and overseas. The result shows the change in the meaning of fire through the metaphorical process of both languages occurred from the same source meaning. The source domain comes from fire characteristics like size, color, ability, and movement, it shows up as the target domain. 26 metaphors in total, including 20 metaphors in Thai. Similarities develop from human experiences via the human body, but differences develop from conceptions of sex, society, culture, and ways of living. In addition, the same word when in different languages Language users have different backgrounds, experiences, and ideas. Therefore, the meaning of the words may be different. Understanding theses contexts will be helpful in teaching and studying Chinese and Thai languages more efficiently.en
