Effects of Levels of Proficiency and Gender on English Communication Strategies Used by Mathayom3 Students at Kurumitprasitsil School

Abstract

การศึกษามีจุดมุ่งหมายเพื่อศึกษากลวิธีการสื่อสารของนักเรียนชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 3 โรงเรียนคุรุมิตรประสิทธิ์ศิลป์ ที่มีความสามารถทางภาษาอังกฤษที่แตกต่างกัน มีการใช้กลวิธีการสื่อสารภาษาอังกฤษอย่างไร และนักเรียนชาย/หญิง มีการใช้กลวิธีการสื่อสารภาษาอังกฤษอย่างไร กลุ่มตัวอย่างมีจำนวน 40 คน ใช้เกรดเฉลี่ยในวิชาภาษาอังกฤษ 4 วิชาที่เรียนในชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 1 และ 2 เป็นเกณฑ์ในการแบ่งกลุ่ม นักเรียนที่มีความสามารถด้านภาษาอังกฤษระดับสูงจำนวน 20 คน และระดับต่ำจำนวน 20 คน แบ่งเป็นเพศชาย 17 คน เพศหญิง 23 คน ใช้การแสดงบทบาทสมมุติ และการอธิบายคำศัพท์เป็นเครื่องมือในการศึกษา ข้อมูลที่ได้นำมาวิเคราะห์เชิงคุณภาพและปริมาณโดยหาค่าร้อยละและการจัดลำดับ ผลการวิจัยพบว่า นักเรียนที่มีความสามารถด้านภาษาอังกฤษระดับสูงและระดับต่ำที่ใช้กลวิธีการสลับภาษา (code switching) ในการแสดงตามบทบาทสมมุติ นอกจากนี้ในการอธิบายคำศัพท์ นักเรียนที่มีความสามาถด้านภาษาอังกฤษระดับสูงใช้ช่วงเงียบ (pausing) และระดับต่ำใช้ กลวิธีการพูดอ้อม (circumlocution) โดยนักเรียนชายและหญิงในการแสดงบทบาทสมมุติ ยังมีการใช้กลวิธีที่เหมือนกัน คือ กลวิธีการสลับภาษา (code switching) นอกจากนี้ในการอธิบายคำศัพท์ นักเรียนชายใช้กลวิธีการพูดอ้อม (circumlocution) และนักเรียนหญิงใช้ช่วงเงียบ (pausing)

This study investigated what communication strategies are used by high and low proficiency students, and how do male and female students use of communication strategies. The participants consisted of 40 students sample from the total population of 60 students at Kurumitprasitsil School. The students' average grades were used as a criterion to classify students into high and low proficiency group. Consequently, there were 20 students in the high proficiency group and 20 students in the low proficiency group. And there were 17 male students and 23 female students. The data were analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively from the students in the accomplishment of the role play and definition plan tasks which were audio recorded, transcribed, and analyzed in order to identify all CSs instances in the data in terms of their frequency and percentage. It was found that both high and low proficiency students tend to utilize “code switching” strategy in the role play task. High proficiency students utilized “pausing” strategy in the definition plan task. Low proficiency students tend to utilized “Circumlocution” strategy in the definition plan task. Moreover, it was found that both male and students tend to utilize “code switching” strategy in the role play task. On the definition plan task, male students tend to use “circumlocution” strategy, and female students tend to use “pausing” strategy.
