The objectives of this research were to (1) study internal and external factors of business which affect Thai Jasmine rice export to China, (2) study the potential of Westen China to be a Thai Jasmine rice market in the future, and (3) present appropriate business strategies to develop to Thai Jasmine rice market. In this research both quantitative and qualitative data were used to answer the main research question. Research covered representative samples of rice exporters to China, government and private sectors. Data analysis consisted of internal factor evaluation, external factor evaluation, content analysis, and descriptive statistics. The results could be summed up as follows: 1. The internal business factors affected to Thai Jasmine rice's export to China, we found that there were basic activities that can be considered as enterpreneur's strengths. Examples of such strengths included : an effective warehouse control, a high-quality monotoring procedure, a suitable package for export, favorable access to distribution channels and a distinguishable brand. While support activities were also considered as entrepreneur's strengths which included: a high standard of rice availability for export, a compatible technology use, an effective business strategic planning.The absence of basic activities were viewed as part of the entrepreneur's weaknesses. Examples of such weakness included: high transportation and production costs, and insufficient information assistance to customers. Support activities were weaknesses such as a weak cooperation in regards to production developemnt, a lack of package development for export, substandard training for employees, lack of motivation and enthusiasm to work, insufficient financial resources, a poor export information support and an unrealible relationship between government and private sectors to push Thai Jasmine rice's policies. However, the results of external business factors also affected Thai Jasmine rice's export to China. We found that external factors were opportunities to support Thai Jasmine rice. Examples of such opportunities included: its high economic growth, its high-income per capita, a lot of cooperation between Thailand and China, its increasing political stability, recognized Chinese preference for imported goods, rising labor cost, various communication channels, and numerous technological and goverbment assistance. While these external factors also presented threats to entrepreneurs. Examples of such threates included: a fluctuating currency exchange rate, a high inflation and interest rate, countless stringent trade rules, serveral natural and man-made disasters in China, new coming competitors, high competitors and substitution goods, high bargaining power of importers and suppliers. 2. The results of Western China's potential analysis, we found that Western China'a potential analysis revealed certain new opportunities for entrepreneurs. Examples of such opportunities included: a continuous economic growth, a large consumer's market, a wide variety of food expenditures, numerous supermarkets, a stable political climate, a reliable logistic sysetm, an energetic development policy to Western China, and an ameliorable customs system. However, its environmental factors presented threated to entrepreneurs. Examples of such threats included: lengthy transportation distances, an uncomfortable shipment along Mekonh River, a difference in language as a barrier to communication, using high personal relations to do business, a lot of tariff and non-tariff barriers, a limited rice import quota, and a deluge of artificial Thai Jasmine rice. 3. The appropriate business strategies to Thai Jasmine rice's market developmemt were following: 3.1 SO strategy pursued opportunities that a good fit to the company's strengths. In the area of marketing, we could summarize the appropriate business strategies to Thai Jasmine rice's market development as the following: (1) government sectors should support the creating of a Thai brand (2) entrepreneurs should find new distribution channels to be close to Chinese consumers, (3) government sectors should support distribution centers of Thai Jasmine rice in Western China, (4) entrepreneurs should have logistic networks with Chinese importers, (5) entrepreneurs should apply technologies for rice export, and (6) government sectors should extensively publicize in Western China. In the area of production, entrepreneurs should reduce a chemical substance's dependency. In the area of other things, there were the following: (1) government sectors and related private institutions should train Thai entrepreneurs to be traders in China, (2) Thai entrepreneurs should have deep business relationship with Chinese businessmen, and (3) government sectors should provide trade agreement information between Thailand and China to entrepreneurs. 3.2 WT strategy established a defensive plan to prevent the entrepreneur's weaknesses from making in highly susceptible to external threats. In the era of marketing, we could summarize the appropriate business strategies to Thai Jasmine rice's market development were the following : (1) government sectors should negotiate to increase rice quota from China (2) entrepreneurs should have a cluster of Thai Jasmine rice for export. In the area of production, we had the following: (1) entrepreneurs should increase production standards and develop rice products, (2) entrepreneurs should make a rice transfiguration, (3) entrepreneurs should use how costs and fast domestic transportations, (4) entrepreneurs should use suitable international transportations, (5) government sectors shouls control a sanitation standard of farmers and rice mills, (6) government sectors should increase punishments for chemical substances to be used in the rice, and (7) entrepreneurs shouls use a high quality traceability system. In the area of other things, we had the following: (1) government sectors should have special strategies of selling Thai Jasmime rice to China, and (2) government sectors should set ab ad hoc team to combat the artificial Thai Jasmine rice. 3.3 Wo strategu overcome weakness to pursue opportunities. In the area of marketing, entrepreneurs should develop rice packages. In the area of production, we had the following: (1) entrepreneurs should have a cluster of Thai's jadmine rice producers, (2) government sectors should support researches and agricultural technology developmemts, and (3) government sectors should educate farmers about agriculture managements. In the area of other things, there were following: (1) government sectors should support finances and reduce export processes, (2) entrepreneurs should learn about Chinese language and culture, (3) entrepreneurs should develop their organizations, and (4) government sectors should revise a rice pawn project. 3.4 ST strategy idenified ways thay the entrepreneurs could use their strengths to reduce their vulnerability to external threates. In the area of China's information, we could summarize the appropriate business strategies to Thai Jasmine rice's market developmemt were following : (1) government sectors should provide Western China's information to entrepreneurs, and (2) government sectors should give information of China's rules in rice trading to entrepreneurs. In the area of production, government sectors and related private institutions should develop a variety of Thai Jasmine rice species. Finally, we, the researchers, view that the important things needed are a great deal of stakeholders' cooperation and full government support. These will develop Thai Jasmine rice's potentials and export markets in the future. |
