เอ็นดอร์ฟินส์ (Endorphins) เป็นสารประกอบทางเคมีที่มีโครงสร้างคล้ายฝิ่นสามารถผลิตภายในร่างกายหลั่งออกมาเมื่อร่างกายได้รับความเจ็บปวด และมีการออกแรง การออกแรงขนาดปานกลางถึงสูงสุด และออกกำลังกายเป็นเวลานาน จะกระตุ้นการหลั่งเอ็นดอร์ฟินส์โดยจะเกิดความรู้สึกมีความสุขล้นที่เรียกว่า runner's high นอกจากนี้การกระตุ้นการหลั่งเอ็นดอร์ฟินส์ ยังมีการฝังเข็ม การนั่งสมาธิ การกินอาหารที่มีรสเผ็ดร้อน หรือ ช็อกโกแลต การหัวเราะ การมีเพศสัมพันธ์ การคลอดบุตร เป็นต้น รายงานการศึกษาพบว่า เอ็นดอร์ฟินส์กระตุ้นการทำงานของภูมิคุ้มกัน ชะลอความแก่ ยับยั้งการเจริญของเซลล์มะเร็ง ลดความเจ็บปวด และความเครียด ลดพฤติกรรมกินผิดปรกติ เนื่องจากประโยชน์ของเอ็นดอร์ฟินส์มีมากมายทั้งในด้านร่างกายและจิตใจ ดังนั้นจึงควรส่งเสริมการหลั่งเอ็นดอร์ฟินส์อยู่เสมอ
Endorphins are endogenous opioid biochemical compounds. They are neuropeptides triggered by pain and exertion. Research has shown that prolonged exercise can increase the production of endorphins. This sense of euphoria has been called "runners high" when workout intensity is moderate to high. Other triggers of endorphin release include acupuncture, meditation, eating chillies or chocolate, laughter, sex and child delivery. According to research, endorphins boost the immune system, slow down the aging process, kill cancer cells, reduce pain and anxiety and reduce symptoms associated with eating disorders. Because of the physical and psychological benefits of endorphins activities to trigger endorphin release should always be encouraged.
