โพธิ์ : จากพุทธคยาสู่หัวเฉียว

Abstract

โพธิ์เป็นพันธุ์ไม้ตระกูลเดียวกันกับโพ ชาวพุทธถือว่าโพธิ์เป็นต้นไม้ประจำพระพุทธศาสนา เพราะเป็นต้นไม้ที่พระพุทธเจ้าประทับนั่งในขณะที่ตรัสรู้ชาวไทยพุทธนิยมนำโพธิ์สายพันธุ์พุทธคยามาปลูกไว้ตามวัดวาอารามทั่วไป เพื่อระลึกถึงการตรัสรู้ของพระพุทธเจ้า นอกจากนี้ต้นโพธิ์ยังเข้ามาเกี่ยวข้องกับชีวิตและสังคมไทยในหลายเรื่อง โดยเฉพาะมหาวิทยาลัยหัวเฉียวเฉลิมพระเกียรติได้กำหนดเอาต้นโพธิ์เป็นต้นไม้ประจำมหาวิทยาลัย และสร้างประติมากรรมอันเป็นสัญลักษณ์ประจำมหาวิทยาลัยภายใต้ชื่อว่าพระบรมโพธิสมภาร อันสื่อถึงพระบารมีของพระมหากษัตริย์ไทย และความสำนึกในพระมหากรุณาธิคุณต่อพระมหากษัตริย์ไทยของผู้ก่อตั้งมหาวิทยาลัย อีกทั้งยังแสดงถึงเป้าหมายของการศึกษา คือ ความรุ่งเรืองทางปัญญาและคุณธรรมของเยาวชนที่เข้ามาศึกษาในมหาวิทยาลัยแห่งนี้ตามรอยโพธิญาณของพระพุทธเจ้าภายใต้ปรัชญาธรรมอันสูงส่งที่ว่า เรียนรู้เพื่อรับใช้สังคม ซึ่งเป็นแม่บทของการใช้องค์ความรู้และการดำเนินชีวิตตามปฏิปทาธรรมของหลวงปู่ไต้ฮงที่ยึดแนวพระดำรัสของพระพุทธเจ้าที่ทรงส่งพระสาวกไปทำงานให้พระศาสนา คือ การอนุเคราะห์ชาวโลกให้ได้รับประโยชน์และความสุข ดังนั้นเมื่อกล่าวโดยสรุปแล้วโพธิ์จึงเป็นสัญลักษณ์แห่งปัญญา ความบริสุทธิ์แห่งจิต และกรุณาที่แสดงออกมาในรูปของการบำเพ็ญประโยชน์ต่อโลก

Bodhi Tree is a species of fig in the same family (Moraceae) as the Bo-Tree. This plant is considered sacred by the followers of Buddhism because Siddhartha Gautama is refered to have been sitting underneath a Bo-Tree when he was enlightened (Bodhi). Bodhi Trees has been involved in many aspects of Thai ways of life. Thai Buddhists usually plant the “Bodh Gaya” Bodhi Trees in the temples to remind themselves of Lord Buddha’s enlightenment. Huachiew Chalermprakiet University has also declared this tree as its official symbol. The university was established with the placement of “Phra Borom Bodhi Somparn” or “Golden Bodhi Tree” sculpture to represent the Royalty and gratitude of the Huachiew Chalermprakiet University founders. The sculpture signifies the university’s academic goals — the dawning light of the knowledge and the morals of the students. Following Lord Buddha’s teaching, the university has set its motto as “Learning to Serve Society”, meaning that the students should apply their knowledge to help other people in the society as demonstrated when the disciple monks were dispatched to explain the dharma to the populace. As a conclusion, the Bhodi Tree is a symbol of wisdom, purity, and kindness as reflected in the society-serving deeds.
