Abstract:
This paper is the first stage of a research study into strategies in teaching Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) in a trilingual education program in Thailand. Through related literature review, it was found that teaching Chinese characters to non-native Chinese learners is recommended at the start of learning regardless of their age because Chinese characters are the main part of the Chinese language and they are the combined components visible and constructive for learners. In addition, there is no attempt to examine any strategies in teaching Chinese characters in Thailand although it is nationally viewed as the third vital language force Thai students to study. CFL teaching strategies are then adapted to suit young Thai learners.
