This research aimed to study reflections of the Chinese-Thai big family in Thai novels in order to analyze the roles of males and females in the family. The scope of this study is seven selected Thai novels, which are Lod-Lai-Mungkorn (A Life of the Dragon), Dong-Doc-Mei (A Graden of Flowers), Mongkud-Doc-Som (A Wreath of Lemon Blossoms), Kang-Tee-Trakoon-Song (The Song Brothers), Jodmai-Jak-Meung-Thai (Letters from Thailand), Tayard-Pongpang (The Unexpected Heir), and Haujai-Ruk-Grade-Refine (The Refined Heart). The hypothesis of this research is a big family is the basic idea of the Chinese, aiming for prosperity of the family. This idea is significantly reflected in the novels studied. This research article reports only the first objective of the study, which focuses on the analysis of reflections of ways of life of the Chinese-Thai big family. The study finds three outstanding reflections, which are 1) the structure of the family and numbers of members, divided into two types-the splitting nucleus family and the extended family, 2) the different professions, which in the first generation are mostly laborers or traders, while the latter generations are successors of their parents or followers of their own dreams, and 3) the Chinese culture, in which most Chinese-Thais still practice the old traditions, such as the wedding ceremony, the Chinese funeral (Gong-Tek), the belief in effects from and shape of visages, the belief in Feng-sui, and the annual festivals or performances e.g. the dragon dance. These reflections show very well the energetic ways of the Chinese-Thai big family in the Thai society.
