การศึกษาระบบความเชื่อที่เกี่ยวกับการค้าขายของคนไทยเชื้อสายจีนในตลาดบ้านใหม่ อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดฉะเชิงเทรา พบว่าคนจีนที่อพยพมาสู่ประเทศไทยส่วนใหญ่จะมีอาชีพเป็นพ่อค้าแม่ค้า หลังจากที่ได้สะสมเงินทุนจากการเป็นแรงงานในระยะแรกๆ และลงทุนค้าขายจนสร้างฐานะมั่นคงได้รวดเร็ว นอกจากคุณลักษณะอดทน ขยัน ประหยัด ซื่อสัตย์ กตัญญู ซึ่งได้รับการอบรมสั่งสอนจากผู้ใหญ่แล้ว การปฏิบัติตามจารีตประเพณีดั้งเดิมผ่านการเคารพสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ พิธีกรรมยังส่งผลให้การประกอบอาชีพประสบความสำเร็จ นอกจากนี้ยังพบว่า อาชีพค้าขายมีปัจจัยเสี่ยงค่อนข้างมาก รุ่นแรกๆ เสี่ยงเพราะเป็นคนต่างถิ่นและต้องพยายามธำรงอัตลักษณ์ของตนด้วย แต่เมื่อกาลเวลาผ่านไปตลาดบ้านใหม่ จากการที่เคยเป็นย่านเศรษฐกิจสำคัญต้องซบเซาลงไป เพราะการพัฒนาเส้นทางคมนาคม จนในปัจจุบันตลาดบ้านใหม่กลับได้รับความนิยมขึ้นมาอีก ด้วยกระแสการท่องเที่ยวย่านตลาดเก่า แม้กระนั้นการค้าขายก็ยังมีปัจจัยเสี่ยงอยู่มาก เพราะการรื้อฟื้อตลาดเก่าต่าง ๆ ที่เพิ่มจำนวนขึ้นทำให้เกิดคู่แข่งมากขึ้น งานวิจัยนี้จึงพบว่า ความเชื่อที่เกี่ยวกับการค้าขายของคนในตลาดบ้านใหม่ แม้ยังรักษาจารีตดั้งเดิม หรือมีการผสมผสานกับความเชื่อตามคติไทยก็ยังมีเชื่อรูปแบบต่างๆ ตามกระแสใหม่ๆเพิ่มขึ้นมาอีกอย่างสนใจ
This study on the belief system of Chinese-Thais regarding mercantilism in Baan Mai Market, Chachoengsaoo, found that many of the Chinese who had immigrated to Thailand had been merchants. After initially accumulating money through manual labor and subsequently investing in their own business, they had quickly established themselves. Apart from their tolerance, diligence, frugality, honesty and gratefulness, in which they had educated by their elders, they always carried out their traditional customs through their respect of sacred items and worship.
The researcher found that being a merchant was a somewhat risky occupation. The first generation faced risks because they were newcomers and had to try and maintain their identity. With the passage of time, from being an important business area, Baan Mai Market entered a phase of stagnation as infrastructure was being developed. However, at present, Baan Mai Market is once again popular due to the trend of traveling in old market areas. Nevertheless, mercantilism is still a risky business because a lot of old markets have been renovated and the number of competitors has increased. It was found that, in connection with the beliefs of people in Baan Mai Market regarding mercantilism, even though traditional customs are maintained or have been combined with Thai beliefs, new trends have resulted in different formations of belief.
